Anders was so excited to earn his new "big boy bike" by collecting "good boy stickers" for each time he got ready in the morning, had no time outs during the day, ate dinner at night, and went to bed. Now he loves showing off his fancy red bike and matching helmet.

Bike: Specialized Dolce

"When I got the news that my sister-in-law's cancer had returned after 6 months in remission I signed up for Team In Training for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. I had never ridden a road bike before in my life. The thought of riding 100 miles was overwhelming, but I decided that if my sister-in-law would continue her fight against cancer, I would ride. I had a hybrid mountain bike that I tried using for the first few training sessions and it was a nightmare. I walked into Alameda Bicycle and met a very friendly, caring and supportive lady. I told her what I was doing and she walked me through the process of buying my first road bike. On November 14th, 2009, I road 103 miles to complete my first century ride and I raised $4,000.00 for cancer research. I have now joined Bike Alameda, I ride every weekend, and I am mentoring for TNT for the Most Beautiful Ride in Tahoe in June. I know I would not have been able to do this without you, Thank-you Alameda Bikes!"

How I Became A Bike Commuter:
"My room mate in 2007 was a heavy smoker (a pack and a half a day!!) So I decided to help him quit and signed us up for the 2007 Aids Life Cycle, a 540 mile ride from SF to LA, despite having not ridden in years. Alameda Bicycle was great in helping us choose our bikes and outfit us for the ride; Gene personally adjusted the fit of our new Giant bikes. We trained, but nothing had prepared us for our first day riding 101 miles from SF to Santa Cruz over hills, in fog, on highways, and along spectacular coastlines. Riding for seven days between 45 and 101 miles was the toughest but most rewarding physical event I ever encountered. Plus, we raised over $6000 for charity.

After the Aids Life Cycle I continued to ride to work a couple times a week until I decided last summer to ride everyday. After less than a couple months I became addicted to my daily rides, even when the days got shorter, temperatures colder, and the rains came. My rule was "if it is not raining when I had to leave, I would ride," then I changed that rule to "if it was not raining heavily I would ride." Since last summer I've only driven the car to work three times. My favorite rides are at sunset seeing the city from the bike bridge coming into Alameda; though the most peaceful ones are often late at night on deserted streets.

I am now on my third set of Armadillo tires; had two flats, and wore out two sets of bike shoes. But considering the cost of fuel saved for my 16 mile roundtrip commute, I not only paid for my bike, my shoes, the tires, a new bigger back pack, but all the extra food I am bringing along.

It is the best thing I have done for my health as I don't ever think about having to exercise and I enjoy taking in the views; it is amazing what you get to see when you ride your bike through the neighborhood. I always wear a helmet, a safety vest and I have several blinking lights to be visible to fellow members on the road. Still I get cut off, horns blared at me and yelled at. I adopted a view that I am invisible to anyone in a car and drive defensively.

So if you see me on the roads in Alameda or riding towards the airport, wave -- thanks for sharing the road! And Mike has quit smoking..."
