Bike Basics 101

There is no best bicycle - it depends wholly on what you intend to do with it. And we take the responsibility of finding the right bike for your needs and physical conditions very seriously. Our reputation depends on your enjoyment, and our policies are in place to retain your loyalty for life. Minimal cash flow? We now offer interest-free, no-payment financing for six months.

Things you should ask yourself:

  1. What are you primary interests: fitness, commuting, adventure, family fun? Consider also what your friends and family are riding, and what they enjoy.
  2. Consider your riding style and body type. The more aggressive and/or bigger you are, the more durable the bicycle components need to be.
  3. Consider your budget, keeping in mind the following:
    • Include in your budget the essential accessories you'll need. A helmet, hydration, flat repair kit, these are not trivial add-ons. Think skiing without a jacket and goggles.
    • How long do you want this bike to last, and how hard are you on your stuff? Money spent on better components now is much cheaper than buying better upgrades later.

Things you should know about bicycles:

  1. Bicycles nowadays are highly specialized for different riding.
  2. How many different sized shoes can you fit? That's about how many different sized bicycles you can fit. Never compromise the fit of the bicycle for anything. Ever. Learn more about bike fit >
  3. A better quality bicycle will perform better in both the short-term and long-term. Then again, some buy a cheap car and splurge on expensive jeans. Your own needs dictate what quality is good for you.

Pricing Guidelines:
  1. Don't blow your entire riding budget on the bicycle - there are essential accessories you'll need to keep you riding for the long-term. Look to spend $100 - $200 for accessories if you are starting from scratch.
  2. Better parts do matter: they last longer, are machined smoother, and are lighter. If you'll be riding often (fitness, commuting), attacking a lot of hills, or are a heavier rider, you'll need a higher quality drivetrain and wheelset.
